Step 1 of 2

Family Sponsorship

Family sponsorship is a way for Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor certain relatives from other countries to come to Canada as permanent residents. One of the objectives of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act is to see that families are reunited in Canada, who have been separated by distance.

You may be eligible to sponsor certain relatives, like spouse, partner or dependent children, parents and grandparents to come to live study or work in Canada if you meet the following basic requirements:

  • Canadian citizen or
  • person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act or
  • permanent resident of Canada
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Be able to support your relative financially when they arrive in Canada.
  • Be able to meet the basic needs for yourself and your family and your sponsored relative, like food, shelter & clothing and thereby ensuring that they don’t need social assistance.

Some spousal sponsorships may be complicated, especially when the sponsor’s themselves are not physically present in Canada. In such scenarios you are better off seeking professional help.
